Personal survival techniques. STCW section A-VI/1-1

About the course
This course forms part of the mandatory Basic Safety training for crew. It deals with the actions to be taken by individuals to protect themselves in emergency situations and includes practical training in the use of life jackets and inflatable life rafts.
Exercises are carefully supervised by qualified staff and can be undertaken by non-swimmers.
The training pool used has been specially equipped with a jumping platform, emergency alarms and water spray in order to enhance the realism of the procedures undertaken.

This course is part of the mandatory Basic Safety training for all seafarers with designated safety duties. The mandatory Basic Safety training courses also include: Personal safety and social responsibilities , Elementary First Aid, Fire prevention and fire fighting.

Target group 
All seafarers from sailor to captain, who want to sail as professional at sea should have followed these first aid at sea. Also for peoples who sail for pleasure this is a very useful course to improve safety on board. There is no previous knowledge required.

Course Objectives

  • To provide a general introduction to Personal survival techniques when alongside, at anchor and at sea.
  • Practical skills
  • To enable all seafarers to meet the minimum standard of competence in Personal survivals techniques outlined in the the STCW Convention Table A-VI/1-1 and the IMO Model Course.

The course consists of: Lectures and practical trainings in the pool.

Course Contents
The training consists of a theoretical and a practical part. The practical part will be in the pool for the exersises with lifejackets en life rafts.
Topics that are covered include:

  • Prevention
  • Safety equipment on board
  • Correct use of different life jackets
  • Life raft and the ‘abandon ship situation’
  • Cold shock and hypothermia
  • Drowning in your life jacket
  • Working with the rescue services
  • Use of life raft
  • Staying together in the water
  • Survival techniques in cold water
  • To get an injured crew member from the water into the life raft

Course Duration
8 Guided Learning Hours (GLHs) are required to complete the course. 

This course is arranged by C.O.S. - CREW MANAGEMENT, s.r.o. in Seafarers Training Center, Palachova 457/29, 290 01 Podebrady.  Practical trainings are in Swimming pool EDEN, U Slavie 1525/5, Prague, Vrsovice.

On successful completion of the course, Ministry of Transport Czech Republic will issue a Certificate of Proficiency. 
Certificate is usually to be issued within 7-10 working days after completion of the course.
